I guess I’m a Twitch streamer now

Young woman wearing a white chef's coat leans over a laptop on a stool. A dark dog sits behind her.

My friend Soph (the one who I regularly cook with during the week) is a games streamer on Twitch. Recently, she decided that for her birthday, she wanted to try something different: She wanted to stream baking a cake… with me and The Architect (who still doesn’t have any online accounts that I can link to, so ‘The Architect’ he will remain).

Now, I am kind of nervous by nature. Being on video doing anything sounds like my particular kind of nightmare. But you know? Being friends with Soph has made me want to be a little more adventurous. She’s so outgoing and accepting of circumstances and takes opportunities as they come — so I decided: Fuck it, we’ll do it live.

It was so fun, you guys.

My friend, co-editor, and general partner in crime Alex showed up to chat (read: defend The Architect from our constant grilling), and several of Soph’s regulars came by as well. Other honorable mentions include Kathryn and Beth, two of my besties. Thanks for stopping by and supporting us, folks!

We made a checkerboard cake, which, let’s be honest, didn’t look like it was going to turn out at first. Soph’s got the recipe up on her blog. You guys, it was phenomenal. I couldn’t believe it. The checkerboard effect turned out perfect.

More than that, though — I really enjoyed the streaming part of it. Interacting with people in real time, laughing with friends both in person and via chat, and becoming more comfortable with the camera as the night went on… It was awesome.

I especially liked the glimpse into Soph’s online universe. She is so devoted to her community and it’s wonderful to see her in her element. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for her.

Also…

I’m going to be on her stream again this Wednesday at 9pm ET! I’ll be playing some sort of horror game. (I still can’t believe I was talked into this.)
